Maia Sandu Grants Traian Băsescu Moldovan Citizenship: A Step Towards European Integration

In a recent announcement on Facebook, Maia Sandu shed light on the process of restoring Traian Băsescu’s Moldovan citizenship. Sandu expressed gratitude towards Băsescu for his unwavering support towards the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing his dedication to the country’s progress.

According to Sandu, Traian Băsescu’s support transcends political affiliations, as he has consistently championed Moldova’s journey towards a European future. The Moldovan President praised Băsescu for his efforts in rectifying historical injustices, facilitating Romanian citizenship for Moldovan youth, and providing continuous support to the nation.

Maia Sandu highlighted the significance of Băsescu’s regained citizenship, stating, ‘We are waiting for you at home!’ This symbolic gesture marks a significant milestone in the relationship between Băsescu and the Republic of Moldova.

Traian Băsescu, in response to regaining Moldovan citizenship, reaffirmed his commitment to Moldova’s European integration. Through Decree No. 629-X issued on 26.05.2026, Maia Sandu granted Băsescu Moldovan citizenship, solidifying his ties to the country.

Notably, Traian Băsescu initially acquired Moldovan citizenship almost a decade ago, in November 2016, alongside his wife, Maria Băsescu. However, his citizenship was later revoked by former Moldovan President Igor Dodon, citing legal violations.

Despite this setback, Băsescu’s dedication to Moldova remained steadfast, with his recent citizenship reinstatement symbolizing a renewed bond between the former Romanian President and the Republic of Moldova.
