Teachers Rally in Front of Parliament: Over 160,000 Signatures Demand Education Law Amendments
On a bright morning, the protest commenced at 11:00 in front of the Palace of Parliament, drawing attention to a crucial cause in the education sector. The unions FSLI, FSE „SPIRU HARET”, and FNS „Alma Mater”, representing more than 300,000 educators, united in a powerful demonstration. The main focus of the protest was the delivery of 160,000 signatures collected from teachers, aimed at instigating legislative changes in the field of Education.
The teachers arrived equipped with vuvuzelas and placards bearing messages such as ‘Respect the Law, finance Education’, ‘Vocation is not about hunger’, and ‘Your Law, the Death of Education’. The atmosphere was charged with a sense of urgency and determination as educators voiced their grievances and demands.
One of the union representatives articulated, ‘Only education bore the brunt of austerity measures under the Bolojan Government’. The collective effort spearheaded by the trade union federations seeks to present a legislative initiative to the Romanian Parliament. The primary objectives include the revocation of austerity measures introduced by Law no. 141/2025, which resulted in detrimental changes to teaching norms, class sizes, and remuneration.
Amidst the fervor of the protest, a participant emphasized the enduring commitment of the educators, stating, ‘Protests for almost a year: Heat, cold, or rain do not deter us’. The unwavering resolve of the teachers underscores the gravity of the situation and the necessity for immediate action.
The demands put forth by the teachers encapsulate critical aspects for the improvement of the education system. These include smaller class sizes, fair compensation for educators, and the restoration of previous teaching norms. The protesters advocate for a comprehensive overhaul of Law 141/2025 to safeguard the future of Romanian education.
As the teachers’ protests coincide with the exam period, the significance of their advocacy resonates deeply. With National Assessment papers being evaluated and high school examinations looming, the educators’ call for reform reverberates throughout the educational landscape. The unity and determination displayed by the teachers serve as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role they play in shaping the nation’s future.
