Nicuşor Dan reveals timeline for Petrotel refinery reopening amid global fuel market concerns
During a recent discussion, Nicuşor Dan provided insights into the potential timeline for the reopening of the Petrotel refinery, shedding light on the current situation and future prospects. According to Dan, the American side has granted a waiver allowing the refinery to remain inactive for up to six months, until the end of October. This waiver is crucial, especially considering the global market’s sensitivity to diesel, a primary product of the refinery.
Despite the technical challenges that need to be addressed before resuming operations, efforts are underway to ensure the refinery’s functionality. Dan emphasized that the timeline for the refinery’s reopening is not entirely within Romania’s control but expressed optimism that it could be a matter of weeks.
With concerns looming over a potential diesel crisis due to the ongoing Middle East conflict’s impact on the fuel market, Nicuşor Dan highlighted Romania’s advantageous position. He pointed out that Romania’s ability to both extract and produce fuel domestically puts it in a more secure position compared to other countries.
Former Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, previously stated on April 14 that the Petrotel refinery could resume operations within 45 days following a new derogation from the US. Ivan underscored the refinery’s significance in ensuring a stable fuel market, with the potential to cover 21% of Romania’s fuel production.
As efforts continue to address the technical challenges and navigate the complexities of the global fuel market, stakeholders are closely monitoring the developments surrounding the Petrotel refinery. The reopening of the refinery could not only bolster Romania’s fuel production but also play a crucial role in stabilizing the regional fuel market.
