Victor Negrescu calls for Immediate Action on European Maritime Security Hub in the Black Sea

In a recent message posted on Facebook, Victor Negrescu, a social-democrat MEP, highlighted the pressing security concerns in the Black Sea region. He emphasized that the presence of drifting mines poses a significant risk to navigation, critical infrastructure, and the safety of the Romanian coastline.

Negrescu urged for swift progress in establishing a European maritime security hub in the Black Sea, an initiative that he spearheaded and continues to advocate for at the European level. He stated, ‘We initiated this effort last year, secured funding from the European Union for the security hub, gained support from European lawmakers, and successfully lobbied the European Commission to back this crucial project.’

Emphasizing the need for a stronger EU presence in the region, Negrescu stressed the importance of enhanced coordination among member states. He underlined Romania’s pivotal role in this process, stating, ‘Europe must demonstrate increased presence, coordination, and efficiency in this strategic area. We require tangible mechanisms for monitoring, rapid response, and inter-state cooperation. Romania cannot afford further delays; immediate action is imperative. We call upon Brussels to expedite the operationalization of the maritime security hub.’

The establishment of a European maritime security hub in the Black Sea is seen as a vital step towards enhancing regional security and safeguarding maritime activities. Negrescu’s proactive stance reflects a growing consensus on the urgency of addressing security challenges in the Black Sea and underscores Romania’s commitment to fostering stability in the region.
