Nicușor Dan’s Call for Strengthening European Security at B9 Summit
The recent B9 summit saw Romanian President Nicușor Dan emphasizing the critical need to bolster European security by increasing defense spending and enhancing military capabilities. The summit, held ahead of the upcoming NATO meeting in Ankara, convened leaders from B9 member states, Nordic partners, and observers from the United States and Ukraine.
President Nicușor Dan stressed the importance of boosting the defense contributions of European allies to NATO, underlining the significance of a robust transatlantic military industrial base. He highlighted Romania’s strategic position on NATO’s Eastern Flank, near Ukraine and the Black Sea, areas facing security challenges.
During the summit, President Dan reiterated that the primary focus of the participating states remains safeguarding their own security interests. He underscored the necessity of providing concrete and effective support to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, stating that the security of all nations is interconnected.
The Bucharest 9 format, established in 2015 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea, serves as a platform for coordinating NATO states on the Eastern Flank. Post the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the B9 has emerged as a key regional forum for discussions on Euro-Atlantic security and backing for Kiev.
Key agenda items at the summit included augmenting defense spending, fortifying the European and transatlantic defense industry, implementing decisions from previous NATO summits, and aligning positions ahead of the forthcoming NATO meeting in Ankara.
